The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar has commended the Federal Government’s effort in curbing insecurity, while also calling on Muslims and non Muslims in the country to live above their own selfish interests.
In his Eid-el Fitr message, the Sultan also urged clerics of both religions to fear God and avoid proactive statements that could lead to violence while preaching to their followers.
According to him, “Clerics of both religions should know that staying attuned to the religious teachings is the only way that brings mutual respect and love which eventually leads to the desired peace in our nation.”
Also, the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji ILiyasu Bahsar has urged Muslims to intensify prayers for the peace and unity of Nigeria even after the Sallah celebrations.
He lamented the moral decadence in the society while calling on parents to put more efforts in the upbringing of their wards. In the same vein, the Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has said that if Muslims do not make the lessons of the Ramadan fast a long lasting experience through sustained devotion to Allah and upholding the teachings of the Quran and the holy prophet, the Ramadan fast would be an exercise in futility.
In his Sallah message, the Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam called on the Muslim community to be prepared to make sacrifices in the interest of nation building, particularly at a time the country is facing enormous security challenges.
The Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi also said that since the Ramadan fasting symbolized the period of spiritual rejuvenation, it is expected that Muslim brothers and sisters would continue to move closer to Allah, even after the Sallah celebration.
The governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola in his Sallah message stated that it is pertinent that all Nigerians whether Muslims and non Muslims are tolerant of each other so that peace would always be maintained. He said respecting other peoples beliefs and sensibilities was important so as to harness the diversity that God has blessed us with to develop a better state and a much more prosperous nation. He also called on Nigerians to refuse to accommodate the machinations of those who seek to profit from their pains or widen their lines of division.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), through its National Publicity Secretary, Tony Okeke also urged all Nigerians irrespective of religious affiliations to eschew all forms of violence and make room for forgiveness, patriotism, love and peaceful coexistence among themselves.
He said the country could not move forward if it was void of love and religious tolerance and urged Nigerians not to allow enemies of the country stoke the fire of violence among them. A former governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni has also lent his voice in urging Muslim faithfuls in the country to continue to uphold the lessons of the holy month by avoiding sinful acts, which were abhorred and to continue upholding the tenets of Islam.
Also speaking on the Sallah celebration, the Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Nurudeedn Abatemi-Usman called on the entire people in the country to show love and affection for one another in the interest of peace and unity. He said amidst the euphoria of the festivity, we needed to improve in our love and tolerance for one another, which he said would improve nation building.
In the same vein, a former senator representing Ekiti North, Ayo Arise has congratulated Muslims in the country on the end of the Ramadan fast, urging them to use the Eid-el Fitri celebration to pray for the peace, unity and development of the country.
The Nigerian Ambassador to Netherland, Dr. Nimota Akanbi has urged Muslims to uphold the spirit of brotherhood, love and peaceful coexistence which Islam represents and called on all to promote unity in the country.
Njiko Igbo also congratulated muslim brothers and sisters for the successful completion of the Ramadan. The message was contained in a statement signed by the association’s Publicity Secretary, Brady Chijioke Nwosu .
